🦷 Post-Operative Instructions for Periodontal Surgery & Gingivectomy
Caring for your gums after treatment is essential for healing and comfort. Follow these specific instructions for supportive therapy in the first 3–5 days after surgery.:
🧼 1. Oral Hygiene
Teeth in the operated area should be very gently brushed and flossed only after 24 hours. Removal of plaque is essential for good healing.
In case grafts have been placed in the area, please avoid brushing and flossing for a few week after surgery, you may visit the clinic for gentle cleaning.
Use the prescribed mouth rinse (e.g., chlorhexidine) gently twice a day, starting 24 hours after the surgery.
Continue regular brushing in non-treated areas to keep your mouth clean.
🧊 2. Bleeding & Swelling
Slight bleeding or oozing is normal. If needed, apply gentle pressure with sterile gauze.
Use cold packs (10 mins on, 10 mins off) for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
🍲 3. Diet
Wait for approximately 1 to 2 hours before eating. Stick to soft, cool, and non-spicy foods for the first few days.
Avoid hot drinks, crunchy foods, alcohol, and smoking.
Stay hydrated, but avoid using straws.
Chew on the non-operated site for 1 week following the surgery
đź’Š 4. Medications
Take all prescribed antibiotics and painkillers on schedule.
Do not skip doses, even if you’re feeling better.
🛏 5. Rest & Recovery
Take it easy for the first 24–48 hours. Avoid vigorous activity or exercise.
Sleep with your head elevated the first night to minimize swelling.
Stop smoking, tobacco chewing and alcohol consumption after the surgery.
